Dr Christiane Hilger, together with a team of international experts in the field, developed a new clinical and diagnostic algorithm for allergies to furry pets. Allergies to animals are common, but diagnosis is not always straightforward. In particular, traditional testing using dander extracts is limited because allergen content can vary and extracts contain many allergens that cross-react between species. The algorithm is published in the journal Allergy, it shows how molecular diagnosis can identify genuine sensitization and polysensitization profiles to furry animals, thereby advising patients on allergy management.
